Old School Fifth Wheel [video]

By: On: Thursday March 25 2010

camper0325Once upon a time you could tow a fifth wheel with a compact car…sort of.

We found an old video on YouTube that shows a Volkswagen Beetle towing a small trailer/fifth wheel. That in itself is interesting, but what makes this even more unique is that the Beetle doesn’t have a traditional trailer hitch. Instead, the trailer attaches hitch attaches to the roof of the Beetle! Check out the video below the jump.

It all sounds strange (and looks even stranger), but with the hitch on the roof, the car has an incredible amount of maneuverability. In fact, it can perform 360-degree turns, so you could conceivable push or pull the trailer.

According to the narration, the trailer is light and sleeps four adults or two adults and three children. We don’t suppose we’ll see anything like this return to showrooms anytime soon, but it sure would be nice to be able to two a trailer big that large with a regular car.
