2010 Forest River Salem Sport XL Review

Don't forget your toys

By Amy Tokic, Aug. 11, 2010
Think of them as icing on the cake, the cherry on top of the sundae. Yep, that’s what dirt bikes, ATVs and jet skis bring to the camping experience – they make it that much better. And not only can you bring them all with you; you can do it in style and convenience with the 2010 Forest River Salem Sport XL Toy Hauler.

Available in an array of floor plans, every Salem Sport XL model comes with extra large cargo space and plenty of sleeping areas, giving you great value for your toy hauler needs. Jam packed with features galore, this Forest River toy hauler offers much more than quality building materials, appliances, and innovative design features – in fact, that’s just the beginning. Not only that, but it does it without sacrificing construction, quality and affordability.

Rugged and well-built, the Salem Sport XL is built with serious fun in mind. Designed for an active lifestyle, the comfort of home comes along for the excitement and action. With plenty of room for all of your toys and storage galore for the all the “little” extras, you can bring it with you. Outfitted with a 140x98 area to haul all your toys, the cargo area can accommodate up to 2,000 pounds – so feel free to bring it all (no ATV gets left behind!).  Thanks to its spring assist east gate and entry door, loading your toys on and off this toy hauler is simple. The toy area has air conditioning and heating, six tie downs, insulated door and diamond plate wall guard, TV mount, dovetail floor and washer/dryer mount – basically, you could happily spend most of your time in here.

Outfitted with stabilizer jacks, a mounted spare tire and roof rack, it also comes equipped with a metal gravel shield on the front so you can head to the rougher parts of the back country.  It may be tough, but it still looks good keeping up appearances. Sporting a premium “sport” graphics package and deluxe gel-coat fiberglass exterior, the Salem Sport is accented with 15” aluminum rims with a steel fender skirt and black frame tinted windows. It even comes with an exterior TV mount (perfect for when you want to watch the game and work on your tan) and an optional fuel station.

The fun doesn’t end when you put away your toys for the day. When it’s time to take a break, head inside the Salem Sport XL for some much deserved comfort. Built for year-round living, it comes with a forced air furnace and air conditioning, as well as a six gallon gas/electric water heater (as an option, you can choose to get a thermostatically controlled heated tank).

Boasting designer Mastercraft interiors, you’ll feel right at home in this toy hauler. Outfitted with Armstrong linoleum, stain resistant carpet with padding, an 80-inch interior height, and full length angled overhead cabinets, you’ll enjoy your vacation in style and comfort.

Living space in the Salem Sport XL has been designed to maximize the interior room. Fully enclosed and accessible through the rear, the living area has a sofa, a convertible dinette that seats four, and a loft area with ladder for sleeping above the cargo area (great for the kids or overnight guests). If you expect company on a regular basis, you can opt to put in the dual electric queen beds in the cargo area and a double air hide-a-bed sofa. For your entertainment pleasure, it comes with a spin around LCD/HD TV in the entertainment center, and you can listen to your built-in AM/FM stereo with CD/DVD and MP3 player inside or out as it features outside speakers.

Remember eating hotdogs cooked over an open fire? Sure, you can still do that, but why bother when you’ve got a stove and microwave at your disposal. The kitchenette also comes with a refrigerator, dinette (complete with under-seat storage), sleek cabinetry with ball bearing drawer guides, a large kitchen sink with a pullout sprayer and self edge countertops.

There’s nothing like getting clean after a long day of getting dirty. And the Salem Spot XL has all the right stuff to wash the grime right off – from its shower with surround and glass door, to a quick wipe down in the sink with matching vanity. The bathroom also comes with a fan that keeps the air circulating.

In the master bedroom, not only are you treated with an amazing place to rest your weary head (you know, after a full day of playing with your toys), but also a personal retreat. Offering lots of storage space for your personal items, like the stylish wardrobe and built-in cabinets, the bedroom features a comfortable queen-sized bed and an overhead fan to help circulate the air and keep you cool.

If all the standards aren’t enough, the Salem Sport XL also comes with a host of options to add on, including free standing table chairs, Carefree Add-A-Wall, 10 gallon gas/electric water heater, 15,000 BTU A/C (in Place Of 13.5) and a 5.5 KW Onan gas generator.
