Nice Unit; Some Shortcomings that can be Fixed
By Night_Wolf (I am an Owner) on Dec 31, 2012We recently picked up a 2013 Grey Wolf 25RR and were pleasantly surprised when towing it home from the dealer as it showed better fuel economy than our previous Trail Sport attained. The 25RR showed a fuel usage of 5 gallons per 60 miles or 12mpg with our 2011 F150 4X4 with the EcoBoost motor (20L per ... 100kms) Forest River claims the 25RR has a weight of 4697lbs or 2130.6kg. We stopped at a weigh scale on our way home & our unit clocked in @ 3968lbs or 1800kg!!! That is a huge difference in weight. One of the reasons the unit is lighter than claimed is the lack of jacks on the corners (I'll be adding 4 corner jacks in the spring 60lbs total weight) Why does any manufacturer ship units without these necessary accessories is beyond my understanding!!! Ours has the aluminium skin with some beautiful graphics. Fit & finish on the outside looks amazing. One complaint is the location of the grey/black water drainage hose holder. It could be placed much closer to the outside edge as could the low point drain. There is another hose under the unit which I think is to add antifreeze when winterizing the unit. Again a very poor location if this is indeed what it is. The interior is nice looking with a good choice of coverings for the sofas, flooring, wall coverings & window valances. Why would Forest River use wood framing on doors that has obvious signs of insect damage? Looks good on a quick walk through but upon closer inspection, when you own the unit, you have to wonder what Forest River was thinking! Oh I know the reason and that reason is to save money. The floor plans on most of the sites I have checked show a bunk over the Queen Bed. On our 2013 model there is no bunk, but a nice set of overhead cabinets. Good thing too as the one thing this unit lacks is storage space. Speaking of storage space our unit came with a 19" LCD TV with a flat panel mount. This mount was attached to what looked like a cabinet. I asked our local dealer what was behind the panel and was informed it was full of wires. The Forest River Forum I joined told me otherwise. Behind that panel is a huge unused cabinet & one of the first modifications performed on our 25RR was to remove the panel & install shelves and a new swing away TV mount. Access to the hot water tank is under the Queen bed and the access hole is very small & poorly located. This too has already been "fixed" with a 9X9 spring loaded panel purchased from our local Home Depot. The panelling that the bed sits on is so thin it again has to be the cheapest panelling available to Forest River. This too has been "fixed" as we sealed the outside edges, added a vapour barrier,re framed the bed area, insulated and added 3/8 plywood sheathing. Our unit came with 2 sofas, facing each other, with a HUGE HEAVY table. With the table in place & both sofas set up to sit on, it's almost impossible to actually sit down for dinner. Again not an issue for us as the one sofa (same side as the overhead storage) will be removed and the table will be tossed in favour of something smaller/lighter. Along that wall we'll be building & installing our own cabinets and a bench for seating utilizing the sofa cushions. 3 other issues have shown themselves either at the dealer on our walk through or once we got the unit home. The bathroom fan does not work; the floor has a bubble in the linoleum, the light in the range hood is defective & the door for the water heater must have been damaged in shipping. Our dealer will be looking after these issues so not too worried about them. This unit is a Toy Hauler and it will easily accommodate either of my motorcycles or allow me to take a friends motorcycle if we have company. It also looks like it will haul a cpl ATVs as long as they are not monster units. As the unit is new and has yet to be camped in my review isn't finished. With the short tow home of approximately 60 mi. or 100kms I'll say it's On-Road Performance rates 4 out of 5 Build Quality & Reliability is 2 out of 5 due to issues mentioned above. Interior Design gets a lowly 1 out of 5 again due to issues mentioned with heavy & too large table, poor quality wood used and a severe lack of storage. Pictures included were taken by me showing the exterior of the unit and some of the things I mentioned in my review Overall Value gets a 3 out of 5 primarily due to the fact this is a Toy Hauler and I can fix it's shortcomings for not a lot of cashRating breakdown
