Macro comfort in micro size.
By Ron van der Voort (I am an Owner) on Oct 20, 2013Purchased a 2014 21DS this year and overall it is a wonderful trailer. In general, the floor plan with the single slide out for the dinette provides ample room to move around and gives the impression of a much larger trailer. The trailer is made by Forest River and comes in various interior design ... options. The trailer has all the amenities, including oven , microwave, full size fridge and double sink. The queen size bed is adequate for most folks, however, at 6'3" it is a bit short. The mattress provided is heated, but lacks some comfort. The entry door is located at the foot end of the bed and provides easy access in and out. Three steps makes entry and exit a breeze. The entry door itself is a standard door with screen door attached and as with most travel trailer doors, the hardware could use some improvement. The other materials used in the Microlite are solid. Fridge is by Dometic as is the electric awning (with LED patio lights) Cupboard doors are solid wood. The walls and roof are aluminum foam core vacuum bonded panels and are exceptionally strong. This provides for a very solid rattle and flex free trailer that can be noticed at every closure of a cupboard door. The unit also comes with a 13.500 BTU rood mounted air conditioning that is more than capable of cooling the trailer down. A heater unit is also provided, with ducted outlets next to the entry door and one in the bathroom. The heater fan is mounted under the kitchen sink cabinet and is noisy. Repeated on/off cycles during the night will guarantee to keep your sleep cycles at the same interval. Carrying a small electric heater if electricity is available will alleviate some of this issue. A standard water heater is provided and can utilize propane and electric. The 21DS is equipped with two 20 lbs propane tanks, one deep cycle battery and 36/36/36 Gallon black/grey and fresh water tanks. The water pumps is located under the bed, at the front left inside the storage compartment and is more than capable of delivering a steady supply of water. A filter system is standard. Dumping tanks is convenient due to the location of the valves at the rear of the trailer. The fresh water tank does not have a drain valve, but a drain hose that is mounted in the middle of the tank underneath the chassis. This can easily be rectified by some plumbing hardware and relocated to the side of the trailer. Low point drains are located at the left rear of the trailer and make draining the plumbing system a breeze. Additionally, besides the standard by-pass valves for the water heater, the trailer also has a separate intake for winterizing on the front left side, an additional valve allowing separation of the water holding tank will allow the water pump to extract anti freeze from an external container and makes flushing water lines for winter storage very convenient. The many features of the 21DS makes this a very nice trailer to spend time in. For towing the trailer is equipped with two torsion bar axles and four wheel electric brakes. The trailer, properly loaded, tows easily behind the vehicle (in this case a Dodge Ram Hemi with a short box) and tracks well. Brakes are more than adequate. The electric tongue jack makes hooking up effortless. The 21DS controls most of it's electric functions from a panel inside the trailer, including awning control, slide out, water pump, lights and battery/tank monitoring. There are a few issues that require some improvement. The slide out has a power cord that is mounted underneath and is suspended with a ridged plastic strip. On some trailers during construction, the strip is mounted to far to the rear and with the slide closed, the now folded strip sags and rubs on the front wheel. Relocating the trailer side mount will alleviate this problem. The bathroom, which is equipped with a toilet, full stand up shower and sink, is vented with a Fantastic Vent, covered with a vent cover. Due to the close proximity of the vent cover to the rear of the trailer, and the airflow behind the trailer, it is possible for dust and road debris to be blown into the bathroom if the vent is left open during travel. It is recommended to ensure the bathroom vent is closed during travel to prevent this from occurring. In general, the 21DS has adequate windows. With the front window exposed, the trailer is light, however, most windows that open are small and difficult to open. A second reversible fan installed in the forward ceiling vent can help move air into or out of the trailer. The 21DS comes with a barbeque that is capable of being mounted outside and supplied with regulated propane pressure directly from the trailer. This is generally very convenient was it not for the fact that the mount is located underneath the awning. In order to prevent staining of the awning, one would have to close the awning before using the BBQ. An additional warning is warranted to not use this set-up in windy conditions that blow hot air towards the trailer from the BBQ. A final comment on construction techniques would be warranted. As is usually the case with travel trailers, the wiring underneath the trailer is exposed and in general not suspended very well. It is advisable to do an inspection underneath the trailer to determine whether any wires, plumbing lines, vents or other items are in need of proper suspension. In summary, the Flagstaff 21DS is a well made, comfortable, well equipped travel trailer that is easily towed by most mid size vehicles. Price point around 16 to 18 thousand dollars makes this an affordable attractive option. This trailer is also available as a Rockwood, also made by Forest River.Rating breakdown
