Great large unit, but.... a few serious quailty issues.
By Ron M. (I am an Owner) on Nov 11, 2019So how do I described this unit, well its perfect for us, and glad we bought it when we did as they didn't make it long, and at the price we paid it was a steal, but it was a bitter sweet beginning. This unit is large, do NOT let the turck trailering guides fool you, it is a 3/4 ton minimum, sure the ... number say an F150 eco boost w max tow should handle it, but this thing actually squats my Ram 5500 more then I thought and I am sure glad I have a 10k tow vehicle when the wind is going or we need a quick stop, so don't let the hyped up OEM numbers get the better of you, or the people you would run into. So let me get the big issues out of the way. Picked unit up in Florida, hit the road to Nashville, then to west Virginia, then home to Pa over several weeks, literally on our last turn onto our road I got a check trailer wiring and brakes alert on the truck dash (good thing I wasn't towing with a half ton now that may brakes were gone), since I was 1 mile from home I went home, once home when my wife got out of the truck she informed me we were missing a wheel, in fact we were missing the wheel, and the hub, luckily we found it a mile back at the turn and it had not hit anyone. Upon inspection we discovered there was never a cotter pin in the castle nut on the axle nut. WOW! So let me add I have been towing equipment for 25 years, I own 14 trailers from 12' long to 36' and everything in between. I even buit my own 32' toy hauler years ago and still have it, but it was built for 2, not 4 LOL Now technically this is a Lippert issue who builds the chassis for a lot of the travel trailer and 5th wheel builders, BUT Jayco should be doing a quality check because this is a serious issue that could hurt people. Now here is the suck part, we called Jayco, we were told to call our INS company, I informed him this was a warranty issue not an insurance issue, but called anyway and glad we did, the inspector has been doing this for years and called Jayco to inform them he found same issue I reported to Jayco and they needed to handle it. Now, since unit is 13'-3" tall it could not be flat bedded and Jayco had no mobile solution, they then authorized me to have it repaired and send them the bill. At this point we were lucky that my place has a shop and power, air, etc and I have a friend in the Fabrication business and that I am extremely handy, so we purchased a new axle since threads on spindle were destroyed and we had no way to check the axle, and buying a complete axle would actually be cheaper. While at the parts supplier I took my springs and had them look at them and they actually looked at my springs and said these springs were rated for just under 10k in their current set up and asked what the trailer rating was, I informed them it was over 12k on the sticker when loaded, they informed me they sell axles and springs all the time to people with RV's because manufactures for some reason are running axle and springs right at or like in my case under the rated capacity, now if you figure in tongue weight with the set up on this unit it is just at spec, which is BS, we all know we cant weigh our units every time we load up. When I showed them the axle they informed me this was a 6k axle, so again my axles were slightly under max capacity. I then asked how much more a 7K axle was over the 6k, I was told 20 Dollars, I then asked how much more were the proper springs over what was on the unit, I was told 10 dollars per set (unit has 4 sets) so the cost difference at time of production to put 7k axes and springs under this unit is 80 dollars, PLEASE Jayco and Lippert explain why you would not give consumers a better product with a built in buffer for 80 dollars, probably less for them?? Especially when you put HD 8 lug rims and the top of line Endurance tires and you market this thing as a travel trailer that built like a 5th wheel? COME ON. So in the end I bought 2 new 7k ales and 4 new spring packs and upgraded everything, I was eating the cost of one axle and 2 spring packs, but that was a small cost for security and we were this deep, and so glad I did. Now, when all said and done the repair cost were around $1200.00 bucks, which was really reasonable, had the unit been towed to another location that alone would have been 500 plus and the axle assembly was 650. So when we called Jayco to send the invoice in the very nice rep who was helping us then dropped a bombshell on us, and that was that his supervisor told him we would need to go through Lippert, Really? So we called Lippert and got a call back from a Rep, who was not very co-operative, or helpful and was full of bad advice, and evasive. This man asked me why we did not take it to the dealer, my reply was that I had called Jayco, asked them to handle it, but since it was to tall to flat bed and they had no mobile solution that I had done what they asked and for a reasonable price. The Lippert rep then told me I should have lashed up the bad axle and towed it 80 miles to the closest dealer, are you KIDDING me? I then asked this man if he was actually telling me to lash up the axle on a 10k plus pound unit and drive 80 miles on a single 6k axle that also had no brakes, and he replied yes. I then informed this idiot that was ILLEGAL and extremely dangerous, and that lashing an axle is a method to get a vehicle off the highway to either repair or tow it and it is not legal or safe to enter the highway with a lashed up axle and no brakes. This man then said "well what I am saying is I have never heard of the repair shop that you used and if you bought a BMW and it broke you wouldn't take it to "jacks auto repair" I then replied " Your right, but then again a BMW fits on a flat bed and were talking trailer axles, and you have just lost my respect and now you can deal with the red head wife, good luck". So 2 weeks later we receive a check for $740 ish dollars, a call to this Lippert rep reveals that's what they feel it was worth, really, so lost use of unit for a month, had this happened at high speed with a first time trailer hauling person this could have been so much worse and now your bocking on 500 bucks? So now we called back to the original Jayco rep, who was pretty appalled at what Lippert had done, and the advice they gave about lashing up the axle, they apologized and actually sent us a check for the balance. So I would rate my Jayco experience with customer service an 8, I would have gone 10 had they not given me the go ahead then had me call Lippert after the repair. Oh and incase your wondering my Lippert experience I rate as a 2, only because they did pay some of it. So semi serious Lippert issue number 2, the power tongue jack, this unit is tongue heavy, mainly because there is no weight on the tail if you have no toys in it, and on just the 4th use of the power tongue jack it was working intermittently, turns out it was a bad ground, which isn't a huge deal except it gets its ground through the bolted down connection. There are 3 bolts that hold the tongue jack to the frame, and after just 4 uses the jack was loose, so I tried to tighten it, but the bolts would not tighten up, then I realized that all that was holding this jack on was 3 bolt into the 3/16 plate steel that was simply threaded, now how many threads can you possibly get in 3/16" steel? Then it dawned on me that this jack was a top mount, meaning the jack goes in from the top, so only thing supporting the heavy tongue were these 3 bolts in some crappy thread on 3/16" plate steel and in the next couple uses it was going to rip out, sending the tongue onto the ground and probably on someone's foot. So I replaced all the bolts with grade 8 and backed up the rear 2 with grade 8 nyloc nuts, I could only do red Loctite on the front bolt as there is no way to access it, now at time of production it would be nothing to weld nuts to the plate steel. So once again Lippert (and a little bit of Jayco) couldn't spend 50 cents on grade 8 bolts and nyloc nuts? I see a pattern. so last big issue, and this is on Jayco, while doing the axle work I was looking around underneath and made another startling discovery, this frame has an outrigger about every 4' down both sides of the unit which is what the exterior walls bolt to, which is good, my buddy had a mallard and it was like every 6-8' and that thing was a POS, what was startling was I noticed the lock washer and nut was just about to fall off, then I looked at the next one and it was gone, I then went around and looked and out of the 22 nuts only 8 of them were still intact, the rest had either fell off, or were close to falling off, so again I went with grade 8 nylocs and fixed the problem, but I can only imagine what could have happened, again 2 dollars worth of hardware would ensure no issues. So point is, no matter what brand you own, I highly suggest you check your axle nuts, lug nuts, back up your tongue jack with nuts and replace or inspect your outrigger nuts, cause all of this drove me nuts. This unit is tall, so tall we got a step stool to reach the top cabinets and to clean the vents, etc and I am 6-1". Now this is good and bad, great for the large open feel it gives you, great for large cabinet storage, and for getting tall items inside the toy hauler, but takes a bit of AC and heat to keep it comfortable, whatever you do make sure you have a unit with twin AC units I couldn't Imagine trying to cool it down with just one when you first set up on a hot day! Things we love, 1) 16' of possible garage space 2) King size bed 3) drop down queen beds (happi Jack) for kids and guests 4) massive ceiling height in bathroom and through out. 5) single kitchen slide makes it all work. 6) great tires ( no china bombs)and rims, HD frame (except for the axles and springs???) 7)large generator 8)LED lighting 9) nice looking unit compared to others. 10) Tows rock solid 11) private entry into MB. 12) very high ground clearance only unit that would ever go up our driveway approach. 13) 30 gal fuel station Things we don't like or had to fix other then huge items above. 1)shower drain leaked 5-6th use, simply fix, un do access panel and tighten compression nut. 2) water tank leaking, notice 2 days after we bought it, turns out tank was slightly cracked, fixed during off season under warranty. 3) Why is the main light switch that turns on every light in the living room and kitchen inside the cabinet with all the other monitors and switches for the slides, exterior lights, power bed etc? Also why do you have to wire the 3 lights in the kitchen on same switch as rest of the lights, if you want to get something in kitchen you have to walk to the door, open the cabinet, then turn on all 10 LED lights in whole units? I actually spent half a day and moved main switch to outside bottom of the cabinet and added a dimmer, then put 3 kitchen lights on a different switch which I actually located in the kitchen, DUH. Huge difference my way. 4) shape and size of black water tank, if you don't move unit often, solids under toliet could be an issue, shape and size of tank doesn't seem to move solids away from drop point very well. 5) Water pump could be better 6) lack of an outlet on top of kitchen counter, there is one on the face of lower cabinets but then if you want to leave a coffee pot plugged in the cord is always across the counter, I added one to the wall and also while I was in the slide out storage bay running the wire I added one to that bat to charge my cordless batteries. 7) lack of cargo bay lighting, there was none, I added some. 8)bathroom sink, not a huge deal but wish it was moved out 2-3" inches more from the wall, when brushing teeth and spitting face is right in the mirror, I actually leave med cabinet door open when brushing. 9)cheap thermostats, this is an industry thing, and I don't get it, replaced ours with digital unit, much more consistent temp now. 10) quality check on pantry and some other areas would have been nice, while most of the cabinets are pretty stout the pantry shelves were cheap and not properly put together, now in all fairness my wife probably over stocked it, but Jayco tacked and screwed on side, but only tacked the other, some aluminum angle and now were good to wife spec LOL. Conclusion, This thing works for us, and even though we had a couple serious issues in the beginning we are good now (I believe) and actually upgraded over stock. The king bed is awesome, the large shower is awesome, drop down queens for the kids, and kitchen slide make this unit perfect for us. I do wish we had a bit more outside storage, but that's a toy hauler issue, as with everything there is give and take, but overall I would buy this unit again, I just wish Jayco and Lippert make a few quality control upgrades......Rating breakdown
