Perfect for single, couple or small family
By Jeffrey Phillips (I am an Owner) on Oct 26, 2020All details in this review based on the 2021 Keystone 177RD I purchased, your options and equipment may vary at delivery of your unit. All opinions should be taken as mine, your results may vary. So far I have camped twice for 6 nights total in this camper. Prior I camped 7 years in a popup, and have ... friends and family with units from popup all the way up to Class A motor homes. I was in no way compensated for this review, I just want people to get the best camper to suit their needs without getting caught up in sales hype while shopping for a camper, or limited information online. Outside Roof is advertised as “full walk on” and does have around 4” of crown in the center, not a standard flat roof, mine was used in moderate rain and the gutters and end drains worked well. Standard colors and graphics, paint in not super shiny, more of a matte or satin finish. Doors and windows: Windows at the rear around the table are very large, making a bright seating area with great views, back window has bottom small slide opening, side windows have slide by bottom up, with screens. Window by sink and at head of the bed do not open. Head of bed is emergency escape window. No window in the door and no window in the bathroom. Most windows have slide down shades included, advertised as blackout, which they seem to be the exception is the sink window, which has a standard blind. Door has friction hinge, it is not free swinging in the wind. Door has no window in it. Built in screen door is part of the door structure, as is standard with most campers. Door cannot be fully opened with awning extended. It has a 2 step, Solid Step that tips into the doorway for storage, and has adjustable feet to the ground. Outside compartments are really generous, two at the rear are under the table seats, and the front is a full pass through side to side. The latches seem light, I would not road run it with just the hand latches used; I lock the compartments with the key locks, which all doors have. There are no lights in these compartments, I added battery touch lights. Unit is prewired for a backup camera, and has “Zamp” brand solar hookups standard. Awning is power model, is somewhat narrow at 10 feet, this is due to window and door placements on this unit. It has shock absorbers that drop the awning when it gets water built up on it. One down side is that the door cannot be fully opened with the awning down, the arm obstructs it. With having no window in the door, this limits vision to the front of the unit while parked. Awning has an LED strip light at the camper, which is full width of the awning, switch is on the panel just inside the door. Axle is single Dexter axle with grease fittings on the end caps. It has trailer brakes and 14 inch tires. Propane cylinder mount on the front is single tank, quick connect no wrench needed, with plenty of room to add a double mount, be mindful of tongue weight according to manufacturer’s recommendations before making any modifications. Battery box and connections are standard, mine came with Interstate startingdeep cycle. Jack is geared pretty low, and takes a while to jack up, I upgraded to an electric, easily changed with 3 bolts and connection to battery. 2 5/16 ball mount, with standard 7 pin connections, and trailer brake connection. If you intend to off grid camp, the battery will charge through pin 4 according to manufacturer’s literature. 4 Scissor jacks, one each corner, for stabilizing, not intended to lift or level the camper. Rear bumper is 4 inch square tube, and will hold standard sewer hoses. Spare tire is attached to the rear bumper, and spare does not include a cover. Water and Septic: 27 gallon fresh water tank, and 30 gallon each gray and black water tanks. Has a gauge panel with LED level indicators for each of the 3 tanks and the battery level. On this panel are the pump switch and the switch to light the hot water heater. Hot water heater is DSI, direct spark ignition and auto lights when the switch is flipped and the propane is on. Hot Water: Standard 6 gallon propane hot water heater. Includes an anode rod, and does have valves for bypass at winterization. I didn’t see a temperature setting for the hot water heater itself, it was adequate and plenty warm for my liking. Water drains for Black, Grey and fresh are on the driver’s side which is standard. I suggest lubing them before use, as mine were a little stiff first time. My camper included a really cheap drain hose, which I will keep as a backup. I purchased a little better one. There are also low point drains near the axle underneath for hot and cold water to be used prior to winterization. Inside Inside electrical: Main light switches are located at the door. Plenty of lights! This camper lights up like daylight inside, but not in a harsh manner. The lights in the bathroom and under cabinet are also touch lights and can be turned on with or without switch on, as with the range hood light. Good distribution of outlets in the camper, GFCI by sink in bathroom and on counter by “kitchen” sink. Lighting is 12V LED, which is standard and draws little power for off grid camping. A microwave is included, and a pretty deluxe model with many settings and power levels. All wiring is color coded on this camper, for easy troubleshooting should that be needed. Inside Propane Appliances: 2 burner drop in type stove top, has no auto or click igniters, I added some. There is no oven. Has a lighted range hood with single speed vent fan to outside. TVAudio: Has a Winegard 360 degree antenna standard, which I have not used, has ability to upgrade to 4G antenna at additional cost. Nothing to raise or lower for the TV antenna. It has a spot on the wall marked for a TV Wall Mount. Mine came with a “boombox” due to manufacturers not being able to get radiobluetooth units for the campers at this time, it has no inside or outside speakers. Beds: Front has a queen short, I will be replacing the mattress; it is not working for me. The table breaks down into what I would assume is a Twin or Twin XL with the usual cushion to mattress use. Cabinets: Has pretty generous cabinets for its layout, one double over the sink, 2 drawers around 13 x 13, and a two shelf cabinet on the side under the air conditioner. You cannot access the outside storage from inside the camper either under bed or under the seating. There is a cabinet at the foot of the bed that has hanging rod for clothes, and a shelf underneath. All in this model are in white, easily wiped down and cleaned. A/C and Heat: Has a propane heater that is not ducted throughout the camper, it only has one air outlet on the unit. As with most of these the fan can be noisy for a light sleeper, it has a wall thermostat. A/C unit is a wall unit, NOT roof mounted, and is a middle grade unit that comes with a remote. It would be cheaper to replace if it went out. Bathroom: Has a full sized shower, albeit short, I am 5’ 7” and it does not have much for head room. The shower head is a removable wand with hose. Toilet is a standard foot flush. Has a larger than usual vanity with counter space, and storage under sink. There is not towel bar, or TP holder, I added these. There is a roof vent fan, but a pretty basic one, with a small bladed fan, and only onoff setting. Flooring: One piece linoleum flooring, does not have the usual cheap feel, I was told the floor is one piece marine grade plywood underneath with the flooring laid as one piece also. Looking underneath, the floor has protective plastic sheeting attached from the bottom side of the camper between the subfloor and the frame. Tables and seating: Large U shaped dinette in the rear, would seat 3 adults easily, however the table size may be a limitation for larger families. Standard 2 post table removable table, the post placement is a little close to the seats and takes some getting used to getting in and out. The cushions are covered in brown vinyl and do have Velcro to attach them in place, so far mine fit pretty snug. There is a shelf to the curb side of the table, probably around 10 inches wide and 36 inches long. Kitchen Sink: Small sized 13 X 15 single bowl sink, plastic as is the bathroom sink. The faucet has a pull out head with vegetable sprayer. Towing: Tows like most campers its size, at around 3,300 pounds it is relatively light, however the wind resistance of the front face of the camper is more of an issue than the weight. At highway speed I would strongly suggest a sway control bar. I have a 2013 F150 6 cylinder, and it pulls just ok, I lose some MPGs on this one. Towing mirrors, even the detachable type would be strongly suggested, as the visibility is pretty limited without them. Warranty: Look at the Keystone site for current warranty on this camper, you will be surprised, they stand behind what they sell. My downsides of the camper: The door arrangement does not allow the door to be fully opened with the awning extended, and the lack of a window in the door. The fact the awning is only 10 foot long due to the arrangement of the doors, windows and compartments. The Bathroom Fan is pretty basic and cheap model. The height of the shower would be an issue for someone much taller than around 5 foot 9. My upsides of the camper: The layout is perfect for one or 2 people would be a stretch for a family of more than 3 people. The layout to me was the wow factor, with the room and the windows surrounding the table, this is the main reason I chose this camper. The bathroom layout was another big plus; NOT having a “shower over the toilet” combo is big for me. Although sized appropriately for the overall size of the camper, people say the bathroom is larger than most. The outside storage on this camper is huge for a camper this size, plenty of room for your outside equipment. My upgrades after purchase: Electric Jack, digital thermostat, double propane rack, towel bar over toilet in bathroom, will be upgrading mattress, touch lights in outer storage, upgraded sewer hose and fixtures, added winterization valve kit and spark ignitors on the stovetop. Overall: The fact that Keystone starts with a full walk on roof and builds down from there tells me this is no slapped together bottom of the line camper Just look at the warranty offered on this camper and you will see that Keystone believes in the integrity of their products. From the time I stepped into this camper, it seemed sturdy. Styling wise, the interior is brighter than the old “everything grey” days of the last couple years ago. My dealer spent as long as I wanted in new camper orientation, not rushed at all, and helped me get my hitch configured to the best height for towing. Although it could be small for a family, for a single or couple it is an ideal choice.Rating breakdown
