Great starter Tent Trailer
By Danny (I am an Owner) on Sep 05, 2012After tent camping for the last 6 years or so we decided to upgrade to a tent trailer. We are a couple with twin daughters and wanted something with a bit more room and easier to organise than a tent. After looking around at used tent trailers and travel trailers the Starcraft Starflyer caught our eye. ... We have a Dodge Grand Caravan as a tow vehicle so weight was a big factor in deciding which trailer to get, if we didn't change the tow vehicle. At 1,100# empty and with a maximum weight of 1,600# this trailer fits perfectly into the weight restrictions of the van. It is a basic tent trailer with no cooker, sink, heater, fridge, etc. but we had most of that from our tent camping days and we find it better to cook outside anyway. It does have interior lights which run off a battery and an access point for power so you can have the essentials like a coffee maker, electric cool box, toaster, cell phone and laptop charger, heater, etc. plugged in. We have had the trailer for about 2 months now and taken it on 3 camping trips already. I suppose we have towed it at least 2,400km in total and it tows very well, even with the van. It takes us about 10-15 minutes to set up and another 10-15 minutes to have everything else out of the van and a cold beer in hand. Much quicker than a tent! To pack up it takes a while to get everything together but to actually take the trailer down it takes about 10 minutes. On our first trip out there was a heavy thunder storm and the trailer stood up to it very well, no water inside and we had plenty of room for the kids to draw and play while we waited for the rain to stop. Again much better than a tent! Sleeping is much more comfortable in the trailer than it was in the tent and the kids also have their own "room" which they like. We have been camping with friends a couple of times who have been in a tent, they are planning on selling their tent and getting a tent trailer similar to ours. The overall build quality is good, although this is the only trailer we have owned so have little to compare it to. The cost was good as well, a brand new camper for the price of a used 5-10 year old camper. Overall I would say we made the right choice for us and will continue to enjoy the little trailer for a few years to come.Rating breakdown
