Magnitude SV34, we love camping.
By Doyle Punches (I am an Owner) on Jul 27, 2021REVIEW OF 2021 THOR MAGNITUDE SV34We have owned this motorhome for about a year, driven it 15,000 miles and slept in it 71 nights so have a fairly good understanding of it’s pluses and minuses. It has been used year-round. We just completed a 4250 mile trip from South Carolina, pulling a 9000# trailer ... at interstate plus speeds. No issues, averaged 8.5 mpg. Going slower can pick up a couple miles per gallon. WHY THIS MOTORHOME? We wanted the pulling power of a diesel, but I did not want an A class. This put us in the Super C Class of motorhomes. The options here were the Freightliner, International chassis or the Class 5 truck chassis. While the first two offer more basement they also have more overall height and a taller climb into the cab. For our purposes lower height is better. The Ford F550 has 16,000 pounds of towing capacity thought the trailer hitch is 10,000. We pull a 9000 plus pound trailer and sometimes go through fields or mud so we opted for the 4 wheel drive model. THINGS WE LIKE The cab is comfortable and is familiar to anyone who is used to a Ford pickup. Basically, I find driving this to be much like driving my dually pickup except its length. We like the layout of the coach. We opted for the 2 recliners which are comfortable. This unit has a residential refrigerator which is spacious and has performed well. I had misgivings about this as we spend nearly half of our camping nights boon docking. However, we have been able to use the generator most of the time so power generally is not an issue. The few times we did not use the generator the refrigerator stayed cold using the inverter and /or solar panel for a day. The outside kitchen is something we use a lot as generally we do not cook inside the motorhome. Not for a technical reason but because that is the way we camp, even in the winter. The shower is large compared to many campers. Cabinet space through the camper is ample for clothes and the other things we wish to take, both inside and out. Engine power is adequate especially considering what we tow. The cab chassis engine has less power compared to the heavy duty pickup but is still adequate. CONSIDERATIONS The hot water is tankless. This is not so good when boondocking as shutting the shower off to conserve water also shuts off the water heater. This results in a good number of seconds of cold water when turning the water back on. We have defaulted to showering fast as possible and not shutting the water off. When hooked up to a water supply and drains, this system is fine. This unit has a full length slide. There is a lot of space generated with this design. There also is a lot of weight with the refrigerator, closets and recliners in the slide. Only time will tell how this works. IRRITANTS As with most new units, there are things that go wrong and require attention. According to a couple of repairmen I have talked to, we have not experienced an unusual amount of issues, one even saying he though we were on the better end of the reliability curve. Supposedly our unit was started pre covid, the factory shut down, the unit was finished when the factory restarted. I suspect some of the THOR issues can be attributed to that. These were squeaky entrance door when driving, window valance and blinds falling down, plumbing fittings not tightened. The only outside light is the awning light. I added one outside LED, will add more on the driver’s side. There were issues from items THOR installed but not made by THOR. Drive motor on slide failed, drive motor on step failed, slide topper awning mounts failed. DESIGN ISSUES First, the fresh water tank drain. The only way to drain the fresh tank is to run the pump to drain it. There is a drain, but under the bed and is very inconvenient to get to, requiring lifting the mattress, unscrewing a panel, then a long reach to get to the valve. What were the design people thinking? Second, the black tank. The tank is shallow under the toilet (curb side), then slopes to the driver’s side where the depth increases. Not an issue as long as the unit is moving daily with some liquid in the tank. This sloshes enough to move the solids into the deeper part of the tank. But this is a big issue when the unit is parked for a few days. The solids collect under the toilet but the liquids go to the deeper part of the tank. The only solution is to have a stick that one can put down the toilet to relocate the solids. Not fun though I have developed a method that is not too bad. Last, filling the diesel tanks. From the factory filling is 45 minutes because the long fill hoses sag creating a low spot yielding slow fill. Dealer fixed the back tank. The front tank automatically refills from the back tank. The generator pulls from the front tank, the truck engine pulls first from the back tank. I suspect both tanks have a vent issue. I consider either of the first two issues to be significant and without an easy fix.Rating breakdown
