After Three Years on the Road, We LOVE our Journey 40U!
By Ed and Teresa Herbert (I am an Owner) on Jun 17, 2014I was looking at reviews and noticed our review after we first bought our 2011 Winnebago Journey 40U. We were surprised at first glance that Winnebago dropped the 40U from their lineup going to the 40R. But then we realized the 42E is so much like the 40U but with a tag (and higher price for the popular ... floor plan) that an upfront kitchen model like the 40R could be a hit. So, would we consider a trade? The Journey 40U has been an all star for us. No major mechanical issues. Very good mpg in its first 38,000 miles (we use it a lot). We still love the floor plan. When you open the four slides, this RV is spacious. Slide out the extendable sofa and the LR takes shape. The large TV is in a great location. The fireplace, while electric, adds to the ambiance while actually offering heat if necessary. We are looking to renovate the dining room table, possibly make it into a bar with the chairs facing the window. The kitchen and large countertops are greatly appreciated. The split bathroom concept works well. Behind the door on the right (as you move to the back of the RV) is the toilet and one sink. On the left, behind a another door is the BIG shower with a second sink. While we do not have any hot water on demand system, we have yet to not have hot water when needed. And it is HOT! The stacked washer and dryer in the bedroom are truly one of my wife's favorite options when we are out for a month or longer. We both sleep better in the RV on that sleep number bed than at our home base. Outside, the paint scheme still rocks! We have the Graystone exterior which really cleans up nicely. It matches our tow car, a 2010 Cadillac SRX4. When we arrive, people notice the Winnebago. I love the exterior storage of 246.5 cubic feet, much more than any other Winnebago, including the 42E and new 40R. I wish we had the DEF tank on the left side but have found ways to work around its location on the RV. Power and performance is excellent with the 380 hp Cummins engine. So as we hit the RV shows and salesman would ask what we have, they would say "We NEED your Journey!" Right. If we would give it away (virtually). They want to give us low wholesale and then sell us high retail for the new one. We never thought we would buy a new, off the lot RV but we liked this floor plan, and as I noted in an earlier review, after much negotiating between five dealerships, got a great deal (Tom Johnson Camping in Marion NC). After three years of driving, camping, vacating, working in it, enjoying it, my wife and I are very comfortable in it, very at home in it and plan to take it many more miles. While the manufacturers have new models, different styles and gadgets to woo us to the RV stores, we think the 2011 Winnebago Journey 40U is a winner. Others must too as there are rarely 40U models for sale and when they appear on line (have yet to see one in the trade journals), they are sold quickly. For those who do not need the bath and a half, do not wish to have a tag axle, but love the floor plan that is now appearing across the Class A RV world, the Winnebago Journey 40U is an EV to consider, sold from 2011-2014.Rating breakdown

Great layout
By Randy Cross (I am an Enthusiast) on Oct 19, 2011After reading the review, we checked out a Winnie Journey 40U. Love the LR layout. The caddy corner TV and fireplace is an excellent location. The kitchen is really spacious. The shower/sink on one side is behind a closed door. The toilet on the other side is behind another door. Lots of smart ... things in this vehicle. We are working to close a deal on a 2011 Winnebago Journey 40U. Nice job Winnebago.Rating breakdown

The Journey 40U met the challenge!
By Ed and Teresa (I am an Owner) on Aug 30, 2011This is our third motor home. It replaces our first diesel unit, one we really loved. So the Journey had a great deal to overcome. And it has done just that. The 2011 Winnebago Journey 40U (and this specific model is key to our purchasing this unit) first caught our eye because, and I am serious, ... it was the right color scheme to match our tow car, a 2010 Cadillac SRX4 which is amazing and another review someday. Next thing that really caught our eye was the layout. As you enter the vehicle, the LR layout offers the extendable sofa on your left with a caddy corner electric fireplace and large color 42" LCD on your right. The TV is hooked up to an in motion HD Satellite system and surround sound. Moving further into the motor home is the kitchen counter on your left which offers an expandable counter top and a dinette table on your right which can pull out to comfortably seat 4. The kitchen has ample counter space and a large amount of cabinets. Next to the dinette is a stainless steel refrigerator just like the one at our land home. Moving to the back of the vehicle one will find a big 3 by 3 shower and sink behind a door on your left. On your right behind another door is a sink with a porcelain toilet. The toilet has a foot lever which works quietly and effectively. The shower is very big and the Journey hot water system is incredible. Moving into the bedroom, we have a king sized bed, Winnebago's version of the sleep number bed. It is very comfortable. We also have our first washer and dryer in a motor home which we have not used yet but will try them out soon. I found the bedroom did not have the same amount of interior space as our previous motor home but we were able to find space for all of our clothes. Outside was a different story as we found 246 cubic ft of storage, the most we found in any motor home. Sad part is the 2012 model does not offer this space since Winnebago increased the 40U chassis by 2000 pounds and decreased the storage by 28 cubic feet. Our Maxum Chassis rides very well so we don't miss the larger chassis on our 2011. We love the double cargo doors which offer a large cavernous pass through space. We have yet to fil up our storage space. On our initial rides, the fit was not very good on our driver side cargo doors and that created some issues. Other quality issues included a vinyl strip that wanted to fall off, our heat pump did not work at first and our generator door was loose. Considering this is a home that travels down the highway at 60 mph (our speed when towing the car), these were small issues easily corrected. The ride has been smooth and our fuel consumption has been right 8 mpg, not bad towing a car too. The driver and co-pilot seats are very comfortable. My wife has realized that the co-pilot seat is made for the woman, or at least a short person. It is near impossible to raise the leg lift as a man of 6'2", my foot is too close to the dash. Speaking of the dash, the satellite radio/Nav/entertainment center work exceptionally well. Reading the manuals, it was easy to set it all up. All in all, very good fuel consumption, comfortable ride, good power and once there, a wonderful layout we both love. Replacing our 2004 motor home was not an easy task for any vehicle but in the end, the 2011 Journey 40U with its floor plan, its amenities, its power, its paint scheme (match our car) and the price was very aggressive by the five dealerships with which we negotiated, the Journey 40U has more than met the challenge. We look forward to many years traveling down the road in our 2011 Winnebago Journey 40U.Rating breakdown
