Owner's Eval of Southwind 36D
By Michael & Marcy (I am an Owner) on Jun 07, 2012We bought the RV as a demo but it was still in pristine condition as you would expect. We love the RV but there are several items that could have been done better. First the faucets are not top quality as you would expect but they are functional. The 1/2 bath faucet does not set out over the sink ... far enough so when you turn on the water to wash your hands you splash on the back splash. We need to replace it but that is an easy item to obtain. It simply screws off and a new one which extends over the sink better screws on. The shocks on the bed are not too good, they do not hold up the bed so we had to use a wooden block to hold it up. We told fleetwood sevice rep and they are looking at the design. The window to the right of the entry door as you enter is a full window. They should have made it a 1/2 window and added the "cribbage table" that use to be there on older models. A small pull up/out table would be very functional there. The hinge and shock hardware over the entry door broke shortly after we bought the coach. I put toothpicks dipped in wood glue in the holes, let the dry for 24 hours and cut them flush with the wood. Our dealer replaced the shocks that broke and used longer screws to attach the hardware. Another electrical plug in the bedroom under the closet would have been a good add on as well as another electrical plug on the 1/2 bath wall near the floor. The rest of the coach is top notch. The power control panel allows usage of even 15amp power to run an AC (we plug into household current at home)and does not trip the breakers. I am still getting used to the smaller holding tanks and their indicators. They indicate fluid levels in 1/3s and I prefer 1/4 for a better estimation of when to dump. The driver side slide (it is huge by the way) is great. However they installed 2 sided stick tape to hold the rubber seal and it slipped somehow and now when we retract the slide we get a big pop as the tape unsticks. Also the shocks or rams (not sure) that control the bedroom slide came loose somehow and our bed would retract at an angle and once in would pop back into the proper position. The dealer has fixed that. The coach has an integrated surge protector which is great and a integrated water filter system. But the water filter does not filter out chlorine too good so I run two additional filter in series on the city water input. It may not bother everyone but I hate the chlorine taste. It is gone now. When I replace the filter i am going to see if I can get a better cartrigde to deal with chlorine better. Finally an important item to all of us RV'ers - Gas mileage - I get between 6 - 6 1/4 mpg. I had a product called Air Tabs on my last coach that added 1 mpg so I added them to this coach and sure enough I am at 7 - 7 1/4 mpg. An added benefit is I get very little blow by when big truck pass me. Believe it or not the Air Tabs work. You can check them out - do a google search on air tabs. The top of the RV is much improved. With regular washing and waxing it will last forever. Now what I have described is some of the short falls of the coach but it is overwhelmingly a well built coach and I would not hesitate to buy it again. It drives and handles great. I am going to add tint for all the windows to cut down on the sun/heat and I am added a diamond shield product to the front to protect the paint and make it easier to clean. So it you are on trying to decide my suggestion would be buy - it is a great coach. I have included pics of coach - the white things on the back are the air tabs. Happy RVing to allRating breakdown
