If you're thinking Sandpiper, think again!!!
By J. Floyd (I am an Owner) on Jul 07, 2011We custom ordered our 2010 Sandpiper 355qbq with everything we wanted in it, exactly the way we wanted it. This was our second Sandpiper. We live and work on the road. And when we found out we were having twins our 28ft travel trailer wasn't going to work for us anymore. So We purchased The 355qbq 40.3ft ... 5th wheel. We took ownership on August 1st, 2009. First problems were straight out of the gate, the carpet on the stairs was already stained with some gooey substance I couldn't get out, there were scratches in the wood on the living room slide, some greasy liquid over one of the bunk slides in the back bedroom, also the sky light over the shower had a couple dozen metal shards laying in it so when you looked up through the sky light you saw lots of little pieces of metal, and lastly that two nails in the stairs were not hammered in all the way so they stabbed you in the feet when you walked down the stairs from the master to the living room. We also ordered a specific couch, and it didn't come with our 5th wheel, because they failed to mention that they didn't make that particular couch anymore. Now props to the RV DEALER they took the couch I wanted from another rig on the lot and put it in our house. This is all laziness in my opinion, the crew building our home obviously didn't care about what they were doing, they didn't take their time, and made a mess of things. The very first day I was extremely disappointed in Sandpiper. Now please keep in mind we bought our first one used, so we expected it to have flaws. This one we custom ordered to our specifications, with all the extras and all the bells and whistles you don't get off the lot, so for $49,000 I was pretty angry! Being seven months pregnant with twins didn't help. In the first six months the DVD player/surround sound went out, we had to have the DEALER order us another one and my husband installed it. The Master bedroom door if you open it all the way into the door pocket it falls off the track. So when we move the house it also falls off the track, so every time we move the house my husband has to put the bedroom door back on track. Unless you close the microwave in the top and bottom corner of the door it doesn't close and work. The hinges on the microwave do not line up correctly. The first winter came around a few months after we purchased the 355qbq, and the heater wouldn't come on. No matter what I did the heater wouldn't start. The RV DEALER came to save the day again, he came out to where we had it parked for the winter and pulled everything apart. During manufacturing they didn't connect the wires properly, so the heater wouldn't fire up. When the twins were a year old and playing in the floor of their bedroom I left the room to make them cups when I came back the heater grate was pulled out of the floor, yes completely out of the floor by my one year old twins, I found a screw in and blood one of the babies mouths and rushed them to the ER. They both had to be x-rayed to make sure they had no metal in their bellies. Thank God they didn't! And thank God for insurance, however the deductible for the ER is still $100 per baby. So $200 later and radiation exposure my children thankfully didn't have metal in their bellies, throats, intestines, or bowels. My husband went to screw the grate back into the floor to find that the holes in the floor were stripped, not only in the grate in the boys room but also in the living area and our master bedroom, so you can just lift the grate up out of the floor with your fingers. We had to purchase a rug for their room, and use a space heater to keep their room warm in order to cover the grate to keep our children safe in our home. The floors are poorly made, at the foot of our bed, there is a significant dent in the floor. How does one dent the floor??? There isn't enough room in the Master bedroom to fall on the floor to dent it. The outside stairs are also poorly made, our bottom stair hangs because the left side bolt broke and we had to prop it up with a plastic step stool from Wal-Mart until we could find a bolt that would fit into it. The recliner fell apart in less than a year, the right side wall of the chair broke away from the rest of the chair, the only thing holding it on was the handle to recline the chair. We paid several hundred dollars to have the recliner, it did NOT come with our house. Then the sleeper sofa was made so poorly that in the first year the metal pole inside was bent and you felt like you were sitting in a taco and the sides would fold up around you. We removed the couch and purchased captain's chairs to go in the couches place because we had to have something to sit on. $300 later, we have living room seating again. We also paid extra to have the electric awning. Less than two years later the awning will extend but it will not retract, the motor has failed. We have to replace the bulbs in the three outside lights every other week, they do not last, and when we use the inside lights every single day, all day long and they last for several months, we can't figure out why the outside lights do not. We have to carry a ladder with us on the road in order to change the outside light bulbs because they are so high off the ground. The first time we moved the house a long distance we blew a tire, and it took out the entire decorative wheel well cover. On this same trip, one screw on each of the ceiling fan blades backed out and left all of the blades slammed together hanging loose, had the other screws backed out the blades would have fallen and could have broke something. Also in the ceiling fan, the light inside now no longer makes a good connection so the light shorts out. The light over the dinning room table has two lights that hang down, during the long haul the knob backed out of one of the lights and now it just hangs there, because one piece is missing. During this trip our closet door proceeded to come off track, and hang freely. The self in the closet that is on the nose of the 5th wheel broke because the shelf isn't even made of wood, it's made of some flexible type of board, this is the shoe shelf mind you. The back wall of the shoe shelf has come apart and you can see the nose of the 5th wheel behind it. Please keep in mind even though Sandpiper gives you so much space to hang clothes, you can not hang that many pieces of clothes or the hanger racks fall out of the wood they are braced into. The bedroom drawer broke and fell into the drawer space, one of the back bedroom drawers did this as well because the screws are so short. Also during this first big trip one of the bunks collapsed in the back, what if we were set up in a park and WHAT IF ONE OF MY CHILDREN HAD BEEN SLEEPING IN THAT BUNK!!!!! And heaven forbid you flush anything in the toilet in the master toilet!!! The piping design is in a curve, so unless you are set up in an RV park with super strong water supply your toilet paper will get stuck and clog up the toilet, we don't flush anything in that toilet anymore. All paper goes in the waste basket! The foundation and seal around the pin box is also coming apart at the seems. The seal around the one of the small end windows on the living room slide pulled away and hangs about one food of it. Also no one cares to mention to you that RV, 5th wheel, & travel trailer tires are hard to find! We have to specially order them in order to get anyone to sell them to us. Not discount tire, not Wal-Mart, not even firestone carry your tires. So I suggest that even though you have a spare, purchase several more and put them in the basement of your rig or on a rack on the back, because if you have a blowout and your're already on your spare you'll be in big trouble!!! So I guess what I am getting at is Sandpiper is not worth the money you are about to spend on it!!! Steer clear! Unless in the freak situation that we got a LEMON, but I'm not holding my breath. I am extremely disappointed with Sandpiper by Forrest River! I will NOT purchase one again, and I will not recommend it to anyone! EVER! Sandpiper would never do it, but they should replace this entire rig!!!Rating breakdown
